We know that instructing a psychiatrist can feel daunting, especially when you are working to strict court deadlines. Our process is designed to be straightforward, transparent and efficient.
1. Initial Enquiry and Case Outline
You can contact us by phone, email or via our online contact form with a brief outline of your case, the type of psychiatrist you require and any key deadlines. If you are unsure which sub-speciality you need, we can advise based on the issues in dispute.
2. Matching You With the Right Expert Witness Psychiatrist
We identify suitably qualified experts from our national panel, considering:
- Clinical and forensic expertise relevant to the case.
- Experience of similar matters and giving evidence.
- Geographical location (where an in-person assessment is required).
- Any actual or potential conflicts of interest.
We then provide details of one or more recommended psychiatrist expert witnesses so you can instruct with confidence.
3. Instruction, Fees and Timescales
Once you are ready to proceed, we agree on the scope of work, timescales and fee structure. We will confirm what documentation is required and by when, ensuring that the psychiatry expert witness’s work aligns with your case timetable and any court directions.
4. Assessments, Analysis and Reporting
Your chosen expert will review the papers in detail and, where necessary, arrange interviews or examinations. They will then prepare a structured report that sets out:
- The instructions received.
- The information and evidence considered.
- The assessment process and clinical findings.
- Their opinions and the reasoning behind them.
All reports are checked for clarity and completeness before being sent to you.
5. Follow-Up, Clarification and Court Attendance
Our involvement does not end when the report is served. We can:
- Arrange written clarification or supplementary reports where needed.
- Assist with questions from the court or the other side.
- Organise conferences with counsel and other experts.
- Coordinate the expert witness psychiatrist’s attendance at court or tribunal hearings.
Throughout, you will have a clear point of contact at Forensic Defence who understands your case and can update you on progress.
